Or should I say listening to as I'm listening to the audiobook version...
Title: We Were Liars
Author: E. Lockhart
Genre: Y/A, psychological fiction
We Were Liars is a tale of mystery and intrigue as Cadence Sinclair Eastman desperately attempts to remember what went wrong during the summer when she was 15 years old. Two years on, Cady is back on the Sinclair family's private island, along with her grandfather, aunts and cousins. Everything is different.
A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.
My thoughts so far:
So far I'm enjoying the storyline and intrigued to see where it leads (I think there is going to be a big plot twist at the end). We Were Liars's is told through Cady's lens in first person, which, as the reader, keeps us in the dark as much as her as to what happened with her accident. I like this as it adds an element of suspense and tension to the writing - we are as confused as she is.
It's beginning to touch on the themes of class and race which I like to see discussed in a book and I hope it is expanded upon as the novel progresses. I have a couple of theories what the 'accident' was but I won't share any spoilers here!
